Gymnasts return home after two weeks

Cardinal Classic held Friday in Irving Gymnasium.

It's been two long weeks on the road, but the Ball State gymnastics team will be home this Saturday for a coveted home meet.

The defending Mid-American Conference Champions will host the Cardinal Classic Friday. Scheduled to meet up with Ball State are MAC rivals Central Michigan and Northern Illinois. Also scheduled are Winona State, Southeast Missouri State, Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Wisconsin-Stout.

In the past two weeks the team has finished third in two, four-way meets away from Muncie and is looking forward to competing back in Irving Gymnasium in the Cardinal Classic.

"We're really excited to be back home," senior Amy Bodus said. "The Cardinal Classic is a big meet every year, and it'll be great to be home in front of a big crowd."

Friday will be the team's first home match since it defeated Western Michigan January 3rd (190.125 to 186.775), the first meet of the season.

The Cardinal Classic also marks the team's first home meet with a healthy roster. Despite the injuries the Cardinals have endured, the team has managed to stay positive.

"We started off with a few injuries and couldn't get everyone in (at the meets)," Bodus said. "Finally, we're starting to get healthy, and we've been improving as the season goes on."

With a healthy roster and the positive attitude, the Cardinals are a favorite to repeat as MAC champions. Friday will be Ball State's first look against Central Michigan, but its second against Northern Illinois. The Cards defeated the Huskies last Friday in Champaign, Illinois (191.575-189.600).

The team's only loss to a MAC foe was a heartbreaking one-point loss to Kent State (193.825-.192.825) on January 11th in Pittsburgh. Ball State will get its first crack at revenge next week when it travels to Kent, Ohio.

The Cardinals will hit the floor 7 P.M. Friday at Irving Gymnasium.
