University launches its new business alumni magazine

Dean of business college hopes publication will inspire current students to follow in the footsteps of successful alumni.

Ball State University has a new magazine for alumni thanks to the College of Business. "Ball State Business" is a bi-yearly publication that focuses on current events happening in the College of Business.

The business college presented its premier issue of the magazine at a launch party in Whitinger Business Building on Oct. 30. Students, faculty, staff and area alumni came together to celebrate the event. The issue that debuted featured stories about students building a supercomputer from hand-me-down machines, a graduate who serves as CEO at a Louisiana-based energy plant and updates on new faculty.

Mary Lauck-Barr, manager of the University of Communications,

serves as the editor. Several featured articles were written by the University of Communications staff, as well as Steve Kaelble, editor of "Indiana Business Magazine."

Barr said she believes one of the magazine's missions is to connect alumni with current Ball State students. The publication also strives to enhance the business department's reputation by showing the accomplishments of students, faculty, staff and alumni, she said. Another goal is to increase pride and support for the College of Business.

"The magazine reaches out beyond the campus," Barr said.

The publication could also connect the university with local businesses. Barr said she hopes to include one of the Papa John's Pizza brothers in the successful alumni section for next spring's issue.

Lynne Richardson, dean of the College of Business, is featured in the question and answer section of the magazine She also said she is excited about the launch of the new magazine and feels that it will give business alumni a better idea of what is happening at Ball State.

"Now (alumni) can be even prouder they are Ball State graduates," Richardson said.

Because this magazine is given to students in the business department, they have the opportunity to read about current events and successful alumni, she added.

"Students can read about the successful alumni and say 'I can do that too,'" Richardson said.
