Letter to the editor: Compromised freedom results from increased homeland security

Dear Editor,

I was encouraged to see the Daily News cover story on the university government proposals. However, I think you missed two key issues that your readers would find valuable.

First, under the "compromise" model, faculty would be gaining 11 voting members in the University Senate. The justification seems appropriate enough; the faculty want a voting member for each academic department on campus.

However, the "compromise" model does not proportionally raise the number of student or professional staff voting membership as well, giving the faculty a better chance to dominate decision making in the Senate.

Second, under the preliminary committee distribution, the Student Publications Committee, currently found in the student-oriented Student and Campus Life Council, would be moved under the jurisdiction of the Faculty Council.-á Why would the Daily News and other publications be forced into the Faculty Council, when it would make more sense to keep them in the "compromise" model's Campus Council?

I chuckled to see Mark Popovich upset that SGA did not invite him to their meeting to discuss the "compromise" model.-á Did he consult students or professional staff when he initially constructed the "compromise" model?-á As the author of the model, it is his responsibility to sell it to the entire campus, including students.-á

The current "compromise" model is not a compromise at all.-á It adds voting power and committees to faculty, while weakening the student and professional staff voice.-á
