Our View: Moore Goals

AT ISSUE: Final public safety candidate displays extensive qualifications and best intentions.

The last of three candidates for the director of public safety, T. Neil Moore, was the focus of a public forum Tuesday. Out of the three candidates, he appears to have the best intentions and qualifications for the job.

Moore, a former police chief who served 30 years on the Fort Wayne Police Department, received a doctorate of education from Ball State in 2001. He came to his forum with issues such as community policing and accreditation for the university police department.

The other two candidates, Purdue University's Linda Stump and Ball State's acting director, Gene Burton, were the subjects of their own public forums during the last week, but did not fare as well as Moore.

During her public forum Oct. 9, Stump had trouble answering questions about goals for the department and was unprepared to compare her own qualifications to those of the other candidates.

When Burton was put in the spotlight, he was basically grilled with questions regarding the parking situation. While Burton has done a good job as acting director, he may not be the best choice. Here, choosing Burton may be a choice for the status quo. The department clearly needs more change.

Moore wants to take the university police department, which was under a lengthy investigation by the Indiana State Police last year, and make it Indiana's first accredited public safety department. This would be a complete turnaround for a campus police department that has seen better days.

Moore was composed and well-prepared. He outlined several goals for the department and presented himself as a qualified candidate.

For a department in need of improvement, the best candidate is clearly T. Neil Moore.
