Ex-Ball State student to be sentenced today

Former student caught in illegal drug bust could face 1 1/2 years in prison.

A former Ball State student who was arrested last spring after being caught conducting an illegal drug business in his dorm room will be sentenced today in Delaware Circuit Court 3.

John M. Lam, 19, Schererville, was arrested in April after police confiscated six pounds of marijuana, 200 steroid pills, syringes, scales and $1,000 in cash in his room at Beeman Hall.

Lam, currently enrolled at Purdue University, pleaded guilty in mid-September to dealing marijuana, a class D felony with a 1 1/2-year prison term. Under Lam's plea agreement, four other drug-related charges will be dismissed.

Prosecutors said Lam twice sold marijuana to an undercover police officer.

Authorities have speculated steroids found in the ex-Ball State student's dorm room were for personal use. Task force investigators - who seized between $13,000 and $18,000 last spring's raid - said the bust was one of the largest ever made in the dorms.
