SGA discusses student-advisor relations, student safety

Student Government Association invited student Board of Trustees member Melanie Scott to its meeting Wednesday to discuss a possible $1,000 increase in tuition for incoming freshman.

Scott explained to senators that the increase is currently a proposal, and no action has yet been taken to execute it. Senate concerns focused on what would be done with the money.

"Part of the money could go to core curriculum funding," Scott said. "Nothing has been finalized."

For this reason, Scott limited her responses concerning the issue, explaining nothing further would be known until the Sept. 26 board meeting.

Senators continued the meeting with their routine agenda, reporting on progress with current legislation goals and stressing they need student feedback in order for such goals to be accomplished.

Senator Donna Dodson said senators are looking into academic adviser and student relations.

"Currently advisers have no requirement to be available," Dodson said.

Senators explained this was one of the flaws they noticed in the current system.

The issue has been on the table since last spring, but Dodson explained SGA needs to find out what students want out of their advisers before taking further action.

In addition to needing student feedback regarding relations with advisors, student safety must also be addressed by students on campus.

Senator Jeremy Kalvaitis said senators wrote a rough draft of a student safety survey, but have not decided on a method for distributing the survey or recording feedback.

Planning centered on student safety carried through to Senate as senator Chris Borkowski explained targets for new legislation. Borkowski said senators are finding out about student identification numbers and if it is possible to change them to a four or five-digit code.

Borkowski said a Web site for Ball State personnel, www.work@bsu, is another focus.

"Professional personnel have access to information they shouldn't have access to," Borkowski said. Some of the information includes Social Security numbers and ethnic and transcript information. Borkowski did not specify what goal the legislation has, but that it will be ready in two weeks.
