Going into the meet this past weekend, head women's golf coach Shelley Sanders said the fact that Ball State just got invited to the Wolverine Invitational showed that the team has a lot of potential. But the team failed to play up to expectations, according to the coach, as the Cardinals finished in last place of 11 teams with a total of 1,014 strokes.
The University of Michigan's golf course was highly regarded by the coach as being one of the best and toughest courses in the country. This weekend, that reputation held up to expectations as Indiana won the meet with a final score of 913, finishing 49 strokes above par. The host Wolverines came in a distant second, finishing 15 strokes behind the Hoosiers.
"It was probably the most difficult golf course of any college team we will ever see," Sanders said. "And we played against two of the top programs in the country in Indiana and Michigan. I think it was a great learning experience, it will help us grow and develop."
"The course was really tough," junior Sara Padgett said. "We need to work on minimizing our mental mistakes. When it comes to go-time, we have to stay in it."
Freshman Carmen Bodine had the top score for Ball State with a 241, as she placed 17th overall. Bodine also shot the best individual round for the cardinals, finishing two above par with a 74 in the first 18-holes Saturday.
"Carmen had the second-lowest score in round one," Sanders said. "It is impressive to see a freshman finish so strongly two weeks in a row."
Freshman Katie Sundberg finished next highest for the team, with a combined three-round total of 255. She shot a low round of 83 Sunday, to improve her overall standing and tied for 42nd.
"We did not have a good weekend," Sundberg said. "We need to be more consistent and be able to play a steady round. We have got this week to work on things though."
