Women's basketball team releases 2002-03 slate

Cards invited to preseason WNIT first time in history

No more than five months after the best season in Ball State women's basketball history, the team announced its schedule for the 2002-03 season, resulting in what head coach Tracy Roller called "possibly the toughest non-conference schedule yet."

"From Kansas State in the Preseason WNIT (Women's National Invitational Tournament) to a road game against Wisconsin," Rollers said in a statement released by Ball State Athletics, "we could play six teams that have the potential to be ranked this season."

Highlighted by its first-ever trip to the women's Preseason WNIT at Kansas State, the team plays all its toughest teams on the road, including trips to Indiana, Louisville and Wisconsin, all top-25 teams nationally within the past two seasons. Wisconsin and Indiana both made trips to the NCAA Championship Tournament a year ago.

In Mid-American Conference play, the Cardinals - who were 13-1 at home last season and 10-0 in the MAC - will will have their toughest matches at home as Ohio, Western Michigan, Miami, and Kent State all make trips to Worthen Arena late in the season. Plus, the team finishes the regular season with a three-game homestand against Western, Kent, and Eastern Michigan.

The Cardinals shared the overall MAC title with Kent State, who beat the Cardinals in the MAC Championship game to earn the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. And with the loss of seniors Amy Fuller and Shala Crook, junior Amy Zercher and sophomore Jessica Nohl, Roller would give no hint as to whom she thought would be the favorite for this year's title.

"The MAC is going to be very competitive this year," Roller said. "Every team in the conference has the potential to be champion in an already competitive league. Most of the MAC teams have tough non-conference schedules to prepare for the upcoming 2003 league season. I see no front runner or sure thing. It should be a battle all the way into March."
