Sororities to hold recruiting meeting

Tonight's meeting answers questions for newcomers

Thirteen social sororities on campus will hold an informative meeting tonight at 9 for those women interested in fall formal recruitment.

Lyndsey Perdue, a member of Ball State's Pan-Hellenic Council said the meeting, to be held in the Student Center Cardinal Hall, is open to any potential sorority members.

Perdue said women can still turn in recruitment applications tonight.

Lynda Malugen, director of Student Affairs, said tonight's meeting should answer any of the ladies' questions that have gone unanswered regarding recruitment.

"This is an opportunity for women who are interested to learn more about each night of recruitment," Malugen said.

Students first had the chance to meet members of the sorority chapters involved with the information night during the activity fair in Worthen Arena, Aug. 17.

Senior Rho-Chi member Jessica Wright said that during the activity fair, the Pan-Hellenic Council, which governs all sorority affairs on campus, passed out 235 applications.

In addition, they have focused on getting the word out about fall rush by ensuring that greek guides were in the mailbox of every freshman and sophomore who is not already affiliated in a sorority or fraternity.

Malugen said tonight's meeting is less about deciding which sorority to pledge to, and more about general information about sorority life.

Rho-Chi, a group of sorority members who step back from their own chapters to assist in recruitment, will spend time in small groups at tonight's meeting to answer questions one-on-one with the possible recruits.

"Rho-Chi's are current members who unaffiliated (themselves) with their sororities so they are unbiased and able to help women answer questions in order to make a decision," said Malugen.

Malugen said that women from Panhellenic Council, which oversees all matters regarding sorority life, as well as Rho-Chi will be able to focus on common concerns of rushees.

She said the items that would be addressed at tonight's meeting would include information on what to expect during formal recruitment, what questions should be asked and what clothing should be worn. In addition to addressing such questions, sorority chapters will provide information about events that will be taking place next week within each sorority suite and the time commitment that would be required of an student who wishes to join a sorority.
