Police stay busy on first weekend

Student accused of assaulting woman in his apartment

A Ball State student was arrested at his apartment Friday on charges of criminal confinement with a deadly weapon, battery and intimidation after allegedly attacking another student.

According to police reports, Jared Ross Stuttle, 21, 2103 W. Washington Street, was arrested at 11:30 p.m. after a call was made to the University Police by Andrea Short, Fairmount. Short accused Stuttle of assaulting her in his apartment and threatening her with a knife.

Short voluntarily went with Stuttle to his apartment to talk, police reports say. Once inside the apartment, Stuttle locked the door and put on the chain lock. Short sat on a couch, but Stuttle pointed to a bedroom and threw her on a bed.

Stuttle, who could not be located for comment, allegedly began questioning Short about her boyfriend. When she answered, Stuttle jumped on top of her and put his hands around her throat. He then began asking Short for her boyfriend's phone number. Stuttle tried to call the boyfriend and then grabbed a pillow and placed it over Short's face, smothering her. Short said she couldn't breathe, and Stuttle said he was glad, according to police reports.

Short struggled away from Stuttle, who cornered Short and then slapped her across her right cheek, the police report said. Stuttle then said he had gone too far and had done too much. According to the report, he apologized to Short for scratches he saw on her left shoulder.

Stuttle then went to a computer and began showing Short her e-mail messages to her boyfriend. Stuttle apparently pulled a knife from a desk drawer and pointed it at Short. Short began screaming and backed into the closed bedroom door, breaking it.

The police report said Stuttle threw Short back on the bed and told her, "If you scream you're dead."

Stuttle then turned the knife toward himself, according to the report, and said he had to kill himself while Short was still there because she would talk to police.

Short apparently grabbed the knife away from him. After escorting Short to the bathroom, the report said the two went to a living room couch. Stuttle started asking more questions and told Short that he "would have to beat (her) to get the truth again."

The phone rang and Stuttle went to the bedroom to answer it. Short then grabbed her keys and left, according to the police report.

Short went to University Police with her parents and reported the incident around 10:30 p.m.

When Stuttle was arrested, he declined to comment to police without having a lawyer present, the police report said.

Short declined to comment.
