Our View: Cops on Bikes

AT ISSUE: UPD moves in positive, community minded direction with bike patrol

Among the many changes the rapidly reforming University Police has in the works is the establishment of a bike patrol as soon as equipment arrives.

Within the next month, acting University Police Chief Gene Burton expects this bike patrol to hit campus. One officer, Brad Tucker, is already patrolling on his bike during the overnight shift.

A two-day training course took place where two officers taught another four the techniques of bike patrolling. Six officers will ultimately be given approximately $1,000 worth of equipment, including a bicycle, safety gear and new uniforms.

Burton said bike patrolling is advantageous because it is faster than foot patrol, but has more interaction with community members than car patrol.

"While they're patrolling, it's easier to stop on a bike and talk to students, faculty and staff," Burton said in the Aug. 15, DAILY NEWS.

Additionally, these bikes allow officers to get across campus more efficiently, giving them the ability to go where patrol cars can't - off-road.

In a time when UPD is seeking ways to connect with students and better serve the community, this bike patrol is a positive step forward for UPD.
