Ehrman's goal lifts BSU over Wright State

Cardinals win on unassisted goal in extra session

The women's soccer team defeated the Wright St. Raiders 2-1 in an exhibition match Saturday. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie through the first 90 minutes, but the coaches had agreed to play an extra 20 minute session regardless of the outcome.

It was in this extra session that Erica Ehrman scored an unassisted goal in a torrential downpour with 4:49 gone to win the game.

Ball State established itself early in the game, taking several shots and playing an aggressive style of soccer. Kate Nadalin scored 18:36 into the first half on an assist from Alicia Kalafut.

The Cardinals outshot the Raiders 15-10, although Wright St. led the shots on goal category 6-5. Wright St. later tied the game in the first half on an unassisted goal by Amy Franks.

Goalkeepers Megan Swafford and K.D. Moreland combined for a total of five saves and the only goal came on a defensive breakdown. Franks broke through the defense with the ball and scored in what was essentially a one-on-one against Moreland.

Head coach Ron Rainey said that he was pleased with the overall performance of his team.

"There were times when we did some really good things," he said. "Everybody had their moments, and the work of our younger players was very encouraging."

Rainey went on to say that the team still has some things they need practice before the season opener this Friday.

"We need to work on becoming better at possessing the ball," he said. "This was one area that was a little spotty."

Specifically, Rainey said that the team broke down from the middle third to the front third and that they need to work on coordinating when to step up and when to drop off.
