Mission to Ride competition comes to Muncie

The Muncie Water Ski Association is hosting the first ever Mission to Ride tournament this weekend.

Mission to Ride is an amateur wake boarding tournament, the first of its kind to hit the Muncie area.

"It's a night tournament," said Andy Munson, who works the tournament, "which makes Mission to Ride a premiere event in the Midwest."

The mission is to evolve a new style of competition in the Midwest and allow the riders to experience a new atmosphere while competing.

"We plan on letting the competition enter the early hours of the morning," Munson said. "We're looking at 2 or 3 a.m. before they're done."

The tournament will take place at the Muncie Water Bowl, the home of the Ball State University ski team.

The actual start of the Mission to Ride tournament will be Saturday, and will conclude on Sunday morning.

"We're expecting a big turn out," Munson said. "There will be approximately 100 riders competing."

Even though the competition is an amateur event, there will be two highly regarded wake boarders.

Mike Hook, who was a national champion, and Shawn Murray, who is ranked high in the country, will be in attendance.

Other well known wake boarders from Ohio and Illinois will be at the event as well.

"We have a lot of quality riders that are competing," Munson said. "Its going to make the competition that much more fun to watch."

To get to the Muncie Water Bowl, take Interstate 69 North to exit 45. Continue east on Highway 28 until reaching State Road 3. Follow it east, and take the first exit from the Muncie Bypass. Halfway down the exit, turn right into the Water Bowl.

The competition begins at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 22. The tourney will continue throughout the night.

Munson said, "They want to go all night long, and we're going to let them."
