Health Center to limit number of condoms distributed

The Health Center will not be offering free condoms to students this summer and will limit the number of condoms a person can take in the fall.

The Health Education Department, which hands out free condoms on the second floor of the Health Center, has closed for the summer due to staffing and financial problems.

When the department reopens on August 1, students will be limited to two or three condoms per visit, said Patsy Donn, director of Counseling and Health Services.

"The Health Education Department recently lost the two employees that were scheduled to work this summer," said Patsy Donn, director of Counseling and Health Services. "One was on a 10-month contract, and the other recently went on an extended sick leave."

Donn said new employees were not hired due to budget problems.

The Department of Health Education has a yearly budget of $7-8000 for the purchase of condoms, Donn said.

"This past year, students would come in and take handfuls at a time," Donn said. "And because we didn't give a set number, there weren't enough left to go around," Donn said.

The Health Education Department is responsible for the abuse

prevention programs at Ball State, which include alcohol and sexually transmtted disease education and breast cancer awareness. They are located on the second

floor of the Health Center where condoms are normally distributed at

"Ye Old Condom Shop."

Students can still get free condoms from the Open Door Health Clinic, 424 W. Jackson St., and Planned Parenthood, 110 N. Cherry St.

The Women's Center, located within the Health Center, will remain open during the summer. Students can still purchase birth control from the Women's Center.
