Baseball coach search continues

Ball State continues their search this week for a new baseball coach. The position was vacated in early June by Rich Maloney, who left to take over as head coach for the University of Michigan.

Maloney was a two time MAC coach of the year and was also named as one of the top five rising coaches in NCAA Division 1, according to Baseball America. He had a career record of 256-144-1, and during his seven years as head coach he led the Cardinals to four consecutive first place finishes in the MAC west. Ball State is coming off a season in which they finished 34-23, placed second in the MAC west and were runners-up in the conference tournament.

During Maloney's tenure as head coach, twenty Ball State players have been drafted. This includes pitcher Bryan Bullington, who was drafted number one overall in this year's draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Also drafted this year were Luke Hagerty, taken with the number 32 overall selection by the Chicago Cubs, Paul Henry in the seventh round and Doug Boone in the 36th round. This is the seventh year in a row that a Ball State pitcher has been drafted.

"Right now our baseball program is as good as it's ever been," said assistant athletic director Pat Quinn. We have excellent outdoor facilities as well as strong academic standards. This would be a very appealing job to a number of people."

According to Quinn, interim athletics director Dick Falls will be heading up a search committee to begin reviewing candidates as early as this week.

Quinn also said that they had received numerous contacts and recommendations, although he could not specify any names.
