With the retirement of Andrea Seger and the fall semester coming up, Ball State announced five finalists for the vacant director of intercollegiate athletics position.
"We had an outstanding pool of applicants for the position," said Don Park, vice president of University Advancement, said in a press release. "It was a very difficult decision to narrow the list to five, but I want to commend the search committee for their hard work up to this point."
After Seger's announcement in February, a search committee was assembled in search of a new director.
Park was put in charge of the committee, which is made up of eight members. The committee included Jon Reno, NCAA faculty representative, David Land, director of Athletics Compliance, Jim Ruebel, dean of the Honors College, Laura Siebold-Caudill, women's swimming and diving head coach, Tim Buckley, men's basketball head coach, Ken Briner, president of Cardinal Varsity Club, and student athletes Ehren Reagor and Donta Smith.
The finalists were shortly announced after senior associate athletics director Dick Falls was named athletic director on an interim basis.
The finalists that were announced include Lawrence Cunningham of Notre Dame; Dick Falls; David Heeke of Oregon; Deal Lee of Oklahoma State University; and Richard McDuffie of Eastern Illinois.
Both Cunningham and Heeke are associate athletic directors at their schools currently. Lee is the executive director of the OSU Athletic Associates and assistant vice president for the OSU Foundation. McDuffie is the director of athletics at Eastern Illinois.
"The process will now continue with candidates coming to campus for interviews in mid-July," Park said. "Our goal at this point is to get the candidates on campus between July 8 and July 19."
President Blaine Brownell said last week that the search for the new athletic director would conclude by fall semester and not sooner.
