First round loss ends tennis season

The men's tennis team fell short Saturday in a 4-1 loss to second-seeded Purdue at the 2002 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship in South Bend, Ind.

The Cardinals earned a third seed in the regional, making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Championship Tournament. It earned the berth by winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament crown. The team defeated Western Michigan in the semifinals and Bowling Green in the MAC tournament finals.

The doubles point was lost after the team came up short in Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Andrew Seni and Chris Varga lead Purdue 6-4 when the doubles point was clinched.

"After a competitive doubles point, the key was at four and five singles," head coach Bill Richards said. "Purdue's seniors really took it to us, which put them up really quickly and made a deep hole for us to climb out of, so I give them a lot of credit."

The lone singles win came when Varga defeated Dereck Miller at No. 2 singles. Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles went down in straight sets.

"We have been pretty good at the bottom of the lineup this year," Richards said. "With today's match we were holding our own at Nos. 1, 2, 3 singles, but they really took it to us in the other three."

The loss to Purdue ended the Cardinals season with a 13-14 record overall.
