Editorial: Sony discount provides more than cameras

New cameras same as used by Lucasfilm.

Ball State recently became one of a few universities to have high-definition cameras available for student use, thanks to a recent partnership with Sony.

The digital cameras are the same type of technology George Lucas used to shoot his upcoming "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones."

Sony was kind enough to sell the cameras to Ball State for $135,000, a savings of $300,000.

The equipment will allow students to experiment with film techniques so that they may show off their creative spirits.

"The equipment acquired from Sony is the best available and will allow our students to create extremely high-quality projects," said Philip C. Repp, associate vice-president for information technology.

Even students at such leading film and television schools like UCLA don't have access to that sort of equipment.

The digital cameras are a small step but will make great strides in cementing school's reputation as a fine telecommunications center. In future Ball State may even acquire the status of a leading Midwestern film school.
