Editorial: Respect the boot; play by the rules

Right or wrong, fines must be paid.

Almost $5,000 in outstanding parking fines were collected on Monday, the day Parking Services' new boot policy went into effect. That's more than it usually collects in an entire week.

Some of those fines were paid by people who had not yet been booted. They were the smart ones.

Because of the new boot policy, work done by Parking Services has become, to the dismay of many students on campus, much more efficient. Twenty-seven cars were booted on Monday, said Gene Burton, acting director of Public Safety. Sandy Pyle, head of Parking Services, said the university only has the manpower to tow about 10 a day and they average about eight.

Parking Services has tripled its effectiveness.

Not many people are happy about it. Now, more than likely, if you aren't paying your fines or if you are parked illegally, you will find a boot on your car.

But the truth is, anyone who is old enough to drive is old enough to learn to pay their fines. Yes, the complaints about Parking Services are valid, but there's nothing to be done about it right now. This is how it is, at least for the time being.

People who don't play by the rules are going to be stuck in the rain. Don't be one of those.
