Editorial: Partisan politics plague O'Bannon's intentions

Govenor attacks GOP, fails to see own similarities.

When Indiana Senate Republicans refused to consider the House Democrats' proposal to fill Indiana's impending deficit, Gov. Frank O'Bannon pointed his partisan finger and accused them of playing politics.

He denounced them for putting their interests above Indiana's citizens.

Yet, O'Bannon seems to be guilty of the same crime.

Monday, the State Board of Finance, comprising O'Bannon and the treasurer and auditor, both Republicans, voted to transfer $9 million to help offset the major cuts in education. Ball State, alone, lost $26 million in expected revenue because of the cuts.

O'Bannon called the transfers irresponsible and objected to the them, even though he has said in the past that education is one of his No. 1 priorities.

One must wonder why the Republicans are "playing politics" when they would not support a plan they did not believe in, but O'Bannon's unwillingness to compromise is not.

Both the auditor and the treasurer have appeased O'Bannon by approving $432 million in transfers to the state's main checking account. Neither of them had to, and they could have voted it down with their majority vote.

O'Bannon has said that tax cuts are needed in order to save our schools, and though some GOP lawmakers agree, most say there are other ways.

Seemingly, O'Bannon has not listened to them, considering he was quick to relieve the House Democrats of any partisan poisoning when they were just as unwilling to listen to Republicans.
