Editorial: Blake media fiasco hardly breaking news

Media circus surrounding actor hearkens back to O.J.

Actor Robert Blake and his bodyguard were arrested Thursday in the killing of Blake's wife, Bonny Lee Bakley, who was found shot in the head nearly one year ago, authorities said.

Blake, 69, handcuffed and wearing a white shirt and green baseball cap, was taken into custody at his sister's home in the gated Hidden Hills community. The star of the 1970s detective series "Baretta" was led away from the home in a white unmarked sheriff's car and driven away.

Police would not discharge the official charge against Blake, but said it involved the killing of his wife of six months.

Television coverage included following the unmarked sheriff's car for an exhaustive amount of time. Larry King devoted his talk show to the case. CNN reporters were commenting about how difficult it will be for the courts to find a jury.

This situation is already an O.J.-esque media circus.

Television has been bombarded with news since Sept. 11, with the "hunt for bin Laden" and all the trouble in the Middle East. But is the arrest of Blake really worthy of the "Breaking News" moniker that CNN gives everything that goes on?

CNN and the rest of the media need to stick with real "breaking news" and stories that are important.
