Local bands now have an opportunity to play live at BW-3 in the village and earn a percentage of what revenue is generated from drink sales.
"It's more of an exposure thing than anything else," said Marc Finney, manager for BW-3's. "It's the only place in the village to hear live music for no cover, and it's giving bands a place to play."
BW-3's plans on booking live bands every Wednesday from 9 p.m. to midnight, with no cover charge. There will also be two Friday shows a month at those same times.
The first no-cover Wednesday show starts tonight, and there will be another one on the following Wednesday.
Although this is something Finney said the bar wants to continue every week in the fall, there are only two or three no-cover nights lined up for the summer. He said he wants to have the fall semester booked by the first week of school.
The selection process is based on the demos that are sent in, said Finney.
Once bands are selected to play live, they are put on a two-week trial period, playing on two Wednesday nights. Depending on how successful the shows are on those nights, bands will be invited back to play on some Friday nights as well as being permanently put on the roster for the fall semester.
The Miller Twins, a light jazz and rock duo, are on the bill for tonight's show, and the group Cabbage is set to play on Friday. Among the bands that have played at BW-3's, The Wayside will be coming back next Friday. The Wayside played there in late March.
Finney said he wants to make this happen to give locals bands a chance to play somewhere so that students can hear these bands without having to spend a lot of money.
Other establishments in the area have presented live bands but have a cover charge for their patrons, and BW-3's wants to offer free music to Ball State students, Finney said.
Finney said he is accepting demo tapes from any band interested in playing Wednesdays, Fridays or both days.
