EDITORIAL: Legal knowledge ensures safe Spring Break

Vacation spots have different laws; be aware.

As you finish packing your bags and loading up your car today for the road trip to parts unknown for Spring Break, be aware of some laws that will make your vacation a safe one.

If you are headed to Florida, be aware the legal drinking age is 21-years-old and open containers of alcoholic beverages are not allowed inside vehicles in the state of Florida.

Also, open containers of alcoholic beverages are not allowed within 50 feet of a public thoroughfare. This means you can not walk along the street or the "strip" with an open container.

South Padre Island in Texas is also a major Spring Break destination where being aware of the law is important. For most offenses on the Texas island, a $500 fine or bond will ordinarily cover the offenses of disorderly conduct, public intoxication, simple assault and a first offense of driving while intoxicated. Venturing south of the border to Mexico for Spring Break makes it harder to get in trouble with the law, but it is much harder to get out of trouble.

As you abandon the weather of Muncie and head to the beach, being aware of the laws and your surroundings will make for memories that will be worth keeping.
