Daily News wins Gold Crown

The Ball State Daily News was awarded the Gold Crown award Saturday in New York at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's student awards convention.

The Daily News was one of just two college newspapers to be given the award.

"This is a tremendous honor for our staff," editor in chief Tom Gubbins said. "Everyone that works at the DN puts in an enormous amount of time. It is nice to be recognized among the nation's best."

The staff was in New York from Wednesday to Sunday of last week for the convention in which many journalism seminars were held.

"Seeing New York and experiencing the atmosphere there was a great experience," Diversions editor Robert Lopez said.

In October, the Daily News won the Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press.

"The DN is the only college daily to win a Pacemaker and a Gold Crown this year," adviser TJ Hemlinger said. "It is arguably the best college daily newspaper in the country and certainly is one of the very best."
