Ball State claims first ever outright MAC West title

Cards start two players for first time in Owens and Burns

Ball State had once chance left to secure an outright title of the Mid-American Conference West division title. Saturday the Cardinals took advantage of that chance defeating Central Michigan on the road, 81-77.

Leading the Cards to the win was junior Theron Smith with his 19th double-double hitting 22 points and tugging down 14 rebounds.

David Webbers 35 point effort for Central Michigan wasn't enough as Ball State used a 10-0 run in the middle part of the second half to find a lead after trailing 39-32 at the half.

Ball State utilized a new starting lineup with Lonnie Jones unable to play due to a knee injury. Starting for the Cards was Robert Owens, Petie Jackson, Billy Lynch, Brian Burns, and Smith. Owens finished the game with a career-high 13 points. Chris Williams who did not start finished with 17 points.

The win marks the first time Ball State has ever clinched an outright divisional title. Ball State will play next in the second round of the MAC Tournament as the team earned a No. 2 seed and a bye in the first round.
