Mid-American Conference Players of the Week:

Ball State swept the West Division Player of the Week awards, with designated hitter Adam Metzler earning Player of the Week and Luke Hagerty earning Pitcher of the Week honors.

Metzler hit three home runs this weekend against Valparaiso and is currently batting .298. Hagerty earned his second Pitcher of the Week award of 2002 after striking out 16 batters, giving up three hits and posting his third win of the season against Valparaiso Saturday.

Kent State catcher Pat O'Brien earned his second East Division Player of the Week honors in 2002 after hitting .500 (9-18) with nine RBI and six runs scored in four games last week.

Buffalo's Tyler Balentine earned MAC-East Pitcher of the Week after allowing no earned runs and striking out six in seven innings during a 4-1 win at George Mason.

Ball State (8-7)

The Cardinals' pitching staff leads the MAC in ERA (3.54), strikeouts (135) shutouts (3), hits allowed (108), runs allowed (68), earned runs allowed (52), and opponents batting average (.219).

Central Michigan (10-5)

The Chippewas are set to play the first game at Theunissen Stadium - Central's new, $4 million, 2,046-seat facility - Friday against Ohio University. Central Michigan was originally scheduled to open the stadium Tuesday against Wayne State, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather.

Eastern Michigan (7-14)

Head coach Roger Coryell won the 375th game of his career Sunday against Ohio. Coryell, in his 15th season as head coach of the Eagles, has a career record of 375-406-2.

Northern Illinois (7-7)

The Huskies scored a total of 40 runs in three games between March 17 and 23, posting at least 11 runs in each contest. Northern Illinois is collectively hitting .303 and averaging 7.4 runs per game this season.

Toledo (2-11; 1-1 MAC)

The Rockets opened the 2002 MAC season against Marshall, splitting a doubleheader Sunday. Toledo has lost three of its last four games and has a team ERA of 11.85, as opponents are hitting .382 against the Rockets.

Western Michigan (6-6)

The Broncos finished 2-1 at the Butler University Tournament Saturday and Sunday. Western Michigan bested Michigan State, 4-3, and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, 8-0, but was shutout 5-0 by Butler in the second game of the tournament Saturday.

Akron (3-8)

The Zips have been streaky all season. Akron opened 2002 with five straight losses, recovered to win its next three games and then lost its last three. The Zips have been outscored by opponents, 107-66.

Bowling Green (6-10)

Falcons' pitchers have walked 90 batters this season in 129 innings. Bowling Green pitchers also lead the MAC in hit batters and wild pitches with 28 and 25, respectively.

Buffalo (5-7)

The Bulls have the lowest team batting average in the MAC, at .257. Buffalo has been outscored by its opponents, 83-50, and has hit two home runs in 12 games. The Bulls have just one hitter above the .300 mark in Brandon DiCesare, who is hitting .341.

Kent State (6-6)

Kent State has won five of its last seven games. The Flashes are led by catcher Pat O'Brien (.463, 4 HR, 16 RBI) and reliever Gus Hlebovy (1.17 ERA, two saves in four appearances).

Marshall (8-10; 1-1)

The Thundering Herd scored 23 runs in a game against Morehead State Friday - and lost. Marshall, trailing 24-20 in the ninth inning, came up one run short against the Eagles. The game featured 44 hits, nine errors and 15 different pitchers.

Miami (8-7)

Miami lost the inaugural game at its new McKie Field at Hayden Park, 8-0 to Purdue Sunday. Construction of the $3.7 million, 1,000-seat facility began after the 2001 season.

Ohio (7-7)

Bobcats' outfielder Mike Arbinger heads into today's game against Youngstown State riding a 13-game hitting streak. Arbinger is second in the MAC in hitting (.474) and tied for third in both hits (27) and runs scored (19).
