Team limbers up for MAC

The Ball State gymnastics team will travel to East Lansing, Mich., Saturday to compete in the Spartan Invitational.

The journey marks the first of four successive road trips for the Cardinals before coming home to host the Mid-American Conference Championships.

The invitational has a four-team field which includes Ball State, Michigan State, Illinois-Chicago and New Hampshire.

The Spartans bring a 9-4 overall record to the invitational, while New Hampshire is 5-2 and Illinois-Chicago is 8-8. The Cardinals are 10-6 overall.

The Cards are coming off one of their toughest weekends of the season. The lost both contests, against No. 23 Kentucky on Friday and No. 18 Missouri on Saturday.

Despite a season-high and fifth-best score in school history of 194.825 at Kentucky, the squad could not overcome the school-record-setting 196.100 mark of the Wildcats.

Tri-captain Jenny Gantt topped the field at Kentucky with a 9.925 floor score. She also turned in a runner-up finish at Missouri.

One of the team's other tri-captains, Renee Planck, is heading into East Lansing coming off a strong finish at Missouri. Planck tied for first on beam with a score of 9.875. She registered the same score on bars to finish third in the event.
