SGA discusses residence hall parking

According to statute, each person can obtain three permits.

Student Government Association discussed transportation options at Wednesday's meeting. Senators started by approving legislation making parking permits available at residence hall desks.

According to the legislation, each desk will be able to offer three parking permits per day. A student is limited to one pass per day and three passes per semester.

Senator Katie Wiese drafted the legislation and said the limits were set to keep students from abusing the privilege.

"Students must pay for permits to park in those lots also," Wiese said. "This keeps a student who did not buy a parking pass from getting a pass from the desk and parking in front of their hall every day."

Wiese said she was unsure if three passes per semester would suffice, but added the On-Campus committee feared taking too much parking away from students.

The legislation had not been discussed formally with Residence Hall Association in a meeting, but Wiese said it was discussed with members of RHA.

The purpose for the legislation is to allow visitors to obtain passes if they arrive after 5 p.m. when Parking Services closes.

On- and off-campus bussing options were also discussed.

President Tommy Rector, Chief Of Staff Michael Lang and Jeremy Wines, chairman of the Community Affairs committee met with Vice President of Business Affairs Tom Kinghorn about MITS transportation throughout campus.

"We discussed having MITS run the shuttle bus service," Rector said."We talked about an expansion of the routes and hours the busses run."

Rector said the discussed routes would be extended to Linden Street and through the Village, also covering fraternity houses and off-campus housing complexes. Weekend hours would be added, providing bus service 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday evenings.

Rector encouraged senators to take a transportation survey available on the SGA Web site to help with these decisions.

Secretary Ashley Furnivall said half the seats are available for the bus to the March 2 Central Michigan basketball game. Tickets are available for $10. The five-hour trip includes lunch and will leave at 7:30 a.m.
