EDITORIAL: Students should take advantage of arts events

Student tickets are often much cheaper than general admission.

Last night's performance of "Ragtime" at Emens was the first of the big Broadway acts scheduled to come to Emens this semester. Future shows include "Cabaret," "Art" and "Buddy" about the life of rock 'n' roll legend Buddy Holly. Emens will also offer magicians Penn and Teller, and the Sleeping Beauty Ice Ballet.

In the past, Emens has also played host to Adam Sandler, "Weird Al" Yankovic and Ben Harper. Though major musical acts have become somewhat of a rarity during the past few years, the management occasionally makes for a surprise, such as last semester when Travis Tritt came by with only a few weeks' notice.

Student ticket prices for most of the shows are fairly reasonable and for the artistically inclined, the performances provide a rather inexpensive form of entertainment.

Seeing a Broadway show almost anywhere isn't cheap. "Ragtime" ticket prices, for example, were $25 and $30 for the general public, but were free for Ball State students. College is one of the few times when most people will be able to take advantage of such a deal. Even if it's only for a theater class, going to a live performance can only foster an audience member's appreciation for the performing arts.
