Cardinals to defend MAC title

The Ball State women's track team will head to Bowling Green this weekend in defense of its Mid-American Conference title.

"Everybody was telling us it was a rebuilding year," she said. "I'm glad the women haven't bought into that."

The Cardinals lost seven performers and half of last year's point total to graduation.

"Right now it's anybody's race," Parks said. "We could be first. We could be fourth. It just depends on who shows up."

Parks said four teams are considered in contention - Ball State, Central Michigan, Western Michigan and Kent State. The team who wins, she said, will be the team who can place its second and third athletes.

"Whether we can get those people in there to score for us is the key," Parks said. "Three or four people can't win alone.

Katie Nowak, a junior distance runner, was a triple winner in last year's MAC Championships, winning the mile, the 3,000-meter run, and the 5,000-meter run. This year, Nowak will add the distance medley.

"Everybody is saying, 'next year you will be good because you hardly lose anybody and you get more recruits,'" Parks said. "But you never know what next year or outdoor season will bring. We've put ourselves into position (to win) and we have to capitalize on the chance."
