Brownell backs Pitts for next provost

If selected by trustees, Pitts will replace Vander Hill July 1.

President Blaine Brownell recommended Beverley Pitts to become the new provost and vice president of Academic Affairs.

If the Board of Trustees accepts the recommendation at its meeting next month, Pitts will replace current Provost Warren Vander Hill July 1.

"I'm extremely pleased and happy to have the opportunity to do things I've already done in the past and bring academic leadership," Pitts said.

Pitts has served as associate provost since 1993. She supervised areas including the Graduate School and University College. Pitts helped the university obtain the $20 million iCommunication grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. She also earned the National Football League Players Association Award of Excellence in 2000.

"My first accomplishment will be for the university to see me in an academic leadership role," Pitts said. "I will spend the early part of the year in July, August and September visiting departments to find out their interests."

Pitts was one of three candidates chosen. The other two were Frederick Maryanski, vice chancellor for academic administration at the University of Connecticut and Frederick Kitterle, dean of arts sciences at Northern Illinois University.
