Squad travels to Western Michigan, Illinois-Chicago

The Ball State gymnasts will continue their 2002 campaign this weekend when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face Western Michigan and Illinois-Chicago in a triangular meet.

The Cardinals are coming off a close loss to defending Mid-American Conference champion Kent State, but they are confident heading into the weekend. Ball State beat both Western Michigan and Illinois-Chicago last season.

"We have also scored higher than either team this season," head coach Mary Roth said.

The Cardinals scored 192.525 points in the loss to Kent State last weekend. Western Michigan and Illinois-Chicago's top scores are 189.675 and 190.35, respectively.

One concern for Ball State heading into the game is injuries. Two top gymnasts have gone down for the Cardinals. Junior Lindsey Kohout is out with an injured ACL, and sophomore Michelle Iverson is questionable with a broken finger.

"With the injuries, there is a little more pressure on the freshmen who normally wouldn't be competing yet," Roth said.

Another area that Roth said needs improvement is the floor exercise.

Roth says the most crucial event, though, is in good shape. "Usually, the beam makes the biggest difference, and we are good on the beam," she said.
