The average student's life is filled with stress. There are part-time jobs to fill, homework to complete and bills to pay.
The student's apartment should not contribute to that stress. Instead, it should be a place to escape it. It is important, then, that students take advantage of Student Legal Services' offer to review leases for apartments and houses.
"Simply put, a student who does his or her homework, reads the lease thoroughly and negotiates is less likely to have problems," said John Connor, the attorney for Student Legal Services.
Students should not just assume they will understand the concepts presented in the lease, nor should they just glance at it before signing. Leases can have provisions which hold students liable for a landlord's court costs or excuse the landlord from liability for any damages.
Connor said most of the landlords in Muncie are fair. Even the best of landlords and tenants, however, can have arguments. At times of great animosity, a solid and equitable lease can be a true blessing.
Before moving in the couch, hanging up the posters and plugging in the television, take the time to visit Connor. It could save a lot of headaches later.
