Pets provide relief from hectic job

My cat, my dog, my job, and school. These are things my life revolves around. Oh, and Melissa Etheridge, but I don't want to sound obsessed!

A few people have expressed their misunderstanding as to why I always write about GLBT issues or stories. So, I'll just remind everyone that I write this column on behalf of the GLBT organization Spectrum, hence the title of the column. But, this week, I will adhere to these peoples' wishes and write about my cat, my dog, my job and school. Maybe a couple words about Melissa as well.

Many people ask me if I want to have kids. Yes, very much. But, as I don't plan to get pregnant any time soon -- I have my cat and dog to treat as my kids. If you ask anyone that knows me, they'll readily attest to that!

My cat is over 8 1/2 years old. Her name is Josephie, and she is not a pure bred of any kind. She has several colors: brown, gray, black and light brown with big green eyes. Sometimes I use the nickname Sweetie Girl, rather than her name Josephie, just because I love to use "pet" names, even with my pets.

She does not, however, respond to "Here kitty, kitty." Do you say, "Here child, child" when you want to talk to your son, daughter, niece, or nephew? Probably not, so I feel I don't have to call her "kitty kitty."

My dog is just under two years old. I've had her since she was 13 weeks, and her name is Schelbi. I sort of share Schelbi with a friend, who wanted "our" dog's name to be spelled weird. We came up with the name by looking through the phone book the day I brought her to my home (clarified because+â-èmy friend was still living with her mom and her mom wanted nothing to do with a dog). Shelby was the second name we found that we liked, but we wanted to be different about spelling it -- probably just because we're pretty weird anyway. The other name I call her is Sweet Puppy.

My job. Oh, my job. I've mentioned before that I work in a restaurant, but I'm not going to tell you which one, because I would hate to have the place overrun by my adoring fans. OK, so that might not happen. I do, however, get recognized about once a week from this column while I am at work, so ask the person sitting next to you if he or she has ever seen me at work and that person might be able to tell you where.

Generally, I love my job, but there are certain people that just really make my job difficult. Asking for things one at a time, being rude and especially people that don't tip after they've run you to death. Please, people, use some common courtesy! (Etiquette, by the way, is 15 percent of your total bill.)

This semester, school has been extremely difficult. That's all you+â-èreally need to know because you aren't reading this to "listen" to me whine about my lack of time to do homework and such. But, hey, I'm here -- by choice like almost all of you, and I'm actually pretty proud to be a Ball State student. Ball State has given me almost everything I need!

In closing, I would like to say to Amanda and Kim that I'm sorry you went through withdrawal during Thanksgiving. I hope this makes up for it.

My words about Melissa Etheridge: SHE ROCKS!!
