Comedian to 'Buzz' into Student Center tonight

Sutherland was inspired by Jerry Seinfeld in 1984, opened for him in 1986.

Students will buzz on down to the Student Center Tally where comedian Buzz Sutherland will perform at 7:30 tonight for UPB's Laughter at Half After Series.

Sutherland has been named Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities Comedian and Entertainer of the year. He's also won the 2001 Reader's Choice Comedian of the Year and National Association for Campus Activities Comedian of the Year in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. He has also appeared on HBO's Comic Relief and MTV's Half-Hour Comedy Hour.

"He's the best there is," said Joey Edmunds, owner of the Joey Edmunds Agency which represents Sutherland. "On the stage, off the stage, he's such a great guy. He's not one of those comedians that goes on stage, does his routine, then it's over when he leaves the stage. He's funny all the time."

Buzz not only entertains the audience, but he gets them involved too. "It's amazing how he can work with people so well," Edmunds said. "He's not the type to embarrass you if you get up on the stage like other comedians."

Buzz has entertained students and others at over 600 colleges since 1996 and has made several appearances at Ball State.

Buzz was first inspired when he saw Jerry Seinfeld perform at the University of Missouri in 1984. Two years later, Buzz was Seinfeld's opening act.

"It was like a dream come true," Sutherland said. "I thought I was going to be a writer, but I figured it'd be more serious than funny."

Buzz has also been praised for his family values. Family serves not only as his first love, but also as inspiration for his acts.

"My little brother Matt went to Ball State and graduated from there a while back," he said. "He's hysterical. We're always joking around."

Above all his rewards, Sutherland deems his children as his biggest and most valuable.

"I see my wife and my children as very happy," he said. "As long as I know my family is happy, then I'm happy."

The audience might expect to see impressions, including Donald Duck, the Crocodile Hunter, Hank Hill, Sling Blade, Bill Clinton and others.
