Custodians Saturday were able to foil what appeared to be an attempt to commit arson in the sixth floor kitchen area of Hurlbut Hall.
According to police reports, an unknown person or persons put paper towels in a microwave oven to burn them and turned on all four burners on the kitchen stove. The fire extinguisher was also missing from the kitchen area.
According to hall director Sally Farber, resident assistants are required to check all emergency equipment -- including fire extinguishers -- during their on-duty rounds. Although Farber said she is not positive the fire extinguisher had been in the kitchen prior to the incident, she said it most likely had been. Farber had last seen the fire extinguisher personally Wednesday.
No similar incidents have been reported in Hurlbut Hall this year, according to Farber.
