Poetry Salon Night will take place from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Madjax.
With the end of April comes the end of National Poetry Month, but six poets have decided to continue the celebration with one final reading, titled Poetry Night Salon.
On Wednesday, six poets — Debra Gindhart, Tracy Mischkin, Michael Eldon DuQuette, Tom Chester, Abigayle Devendorf and Jesse Etsler — will honor Thomas Thornburg and Mary Patterson Thornburg and share the art of poetry with the Muncie community at Madjax.
“Poetry readings seemed overdue in Muncie,” said Chester, assistant planer for the event. “We are getting the ball rolling again.”
Preparation for this event took several days for most of the performing poets, and Gindhart said audience members should “expect to hear the spirit of each of the poets ringing out from the paper.”
“I practice my works the day before and spend several days leading up to the event pouring through my poems selecting the perfect pieces to recite,” Gindhart said.
Additionally, Chester said his preparation process involves looking for new writings to read as well as mixing in some of his older writing that would be entertaining.
While the event is free, the group hopes to inspire attendees to donate at least $5 to help finance future art promotion at Madjax.
“I am a big believer in reading poetry aloud,” Chester said. “It brings out the musical aspects of poetry. Good poetry should enable a listener to conjure images. The words are important, but the sounds of the words can also be a factor.”
