Three people are dead and two people are in the hospital after a crash near Gaston Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency responders were called to Wheeling Avenue near Delaware County Road 950-N. around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputy Joe Krupa with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said one vehicle was traveling southbound and one was traveling northbound at the time of the accident.

The southbound vehicle, which had four people in it, was believed to be traveling at a high rate of speed when it crossed the center line and struck the northbound vehicle.

Two people from the southbound vehicle were pronounced dead on the scene, one was flown to a hospital in Indianapolis and one was transported to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

Both Joshua Hartley, 18, the driver of the southbound vehicle, and Matthew Case, 28, the front passenger of the southbound vehicle, were pronounced dead on the scene.

On Wednesday, Lydia Astrop, 18, and a passenger in the southbound vehicle, died due to her injuries.

Astrop was flown to St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis from the scene of the crash.

The driver of the northbound vehicle, the only person in the car at the time of the crash, was transported by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office is determining if drugs and alcohol were a factor in the crash due to evidence found at the scene.
