Changing temperatures throughout the week have put pothole repairs at the top of the Indiana Department of Transportation’s to-do list.

According to a press release sent out by INDOT Tuesday, crews will be closing lanes — even during peak travel times — to repair potholes.

Potholes are formed when water that has seeped into the road freezes, expands and melts, loosening the pavement. When vehicles drive over it, that further loosens the road, creating a hole.

To repair the potholes, crews won't be using a hot-mix asphalt. Instead, crews will use a temporary fix specially suited for winter weather: a blend of small stone and liquid asphalt, according to the press release.

INDOT crews repair potholes on numbered state routes, interstates and U.S. highways. To report a pothole on any of those roadways, drivers can go to the INDOT website.
