Emergency crews reported to the scene of a house fire and possible explosion on the southeast side of Muncie on Thursday, Oct. 29.

Officials have reported that a stolen furnace caused the vacant home to leak natural gas. The burglars left the gas pipe line in the basement uncapped. The buildup of gas caused the house to explode.

A call was made reporting an explosion on the 2000 block of S. Eaton Avenue, just south of Memorial Drive.

Fire officials evacuated residents of about 100 homes in a 2-block radius around the house to the Marsh Supermarket on Burlington Avenue until Vectren employees confirmed that all gas lines were shut off.

No injuries have been reported, but homes on either side of the house in question did sustain damage from the apparent blast.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshall’s office were on the scene, but at about 10:15 p.m. a decision was made to wait for daylight for an extensive search into the cause of the explosion.
