Suspicious odor under investigation at North Side Walmart

The Muncie Police Department said the Walmart on the North Side of Muncie is safe to use after authorities were alerted about a strange stench March 25.

The Muncie Fire Department, State Police and Emergency Management Agency Health Department, as well as the Muncie Police Department, were called on the scene.

Jason Rogers, the director of Delaware County Emergency Management Agency, said the agency used air monitory equipment and test kits to check for dangerous substances.

The tests ran by the EMA and other agencies such as Health Department and Muncie Fire Department ruled out biological agents or gas that could be detected at dangerous levels.

MPD Sergeant Seth Stanley, of the criminal investigation division, said two people had to go to the hospital.

“I assume they were experiencing some kind of medical episode as a result of the smell,” Stanley said.

Rogers confirmed that a couple of people were taken to the hospital and treated, and others were taken as a precaution. They were all released that night.

Stanley deems that it is safe to use the Walmart because “no chemicals or anything suspicious was found inside the store.”

The Muncie Police Department is currently investigating the cause of the stench.
