River North Chicago Dance Company arrives at Emens

As one of Chicago's leading dance companies, The River North Dance Company provides emotional performances that gravitate towards the audience.

The River North Chicago Dance Company will be performing Sunday, Sept. 12 at John R. Emens Auditorium at 7 p.m. Student tickets are $5, adults tickets are $22.

Christie Zimmerman, a dance professor at Ball State, expects only the best from the River North Dance Company's performance.

"I expect it to be great. I've grown up watching them and going to their performances. They have a variety of repertoire and they have an amazing reputation," Zimmerman said. "I'm really looking forward to it."

The Dance Company will also be hosting a master class for all the students in Zimmerman's jazz dance class. The students will get to experience interacting with professionals while incorporating educational benefits to their studies.

"I think it's a really wonderful opportunity and good exposure. The company is actually going to teach them techniques that they will see. They will be able to watch as an audience and be able to learn something in the style of the company's work," Zimmerman said. "In general, whenever students have the opportunity to witness something they want to do, that in itself is inspiring."

With high expectations for the show, the dance department may only benefit from the performance and experience with the company.

"The dance department is so grateful for Bob Myers and Emens Auditorium for providing us this opportunity. We're extremely lucky," Zimmerman said.

Sarah Bibik, assistant artistic director of the River North Dance Company, said the dance company hopes to convey deeper intentions through their performances.

"Our point is not display but to evoke," she said. "We're helping people feel that pain and it's just a shift in consciousness for our dancers. One of the main things that we do is connect to the audience. We want the audience to feel connected to each other and to us."

This feeling of connection can be accentuated with an audience of a younger age, and the River North Dance Company really hopes to make an impact with a college audience.

"College students, in general, are really seeking. They're a great audience to have. They seem to be more open. It is really easy to get lost in the physical aspect but we hope to help people feel connected," Bibik said.

With its foundation starting in 1989, the River North Dance Company has established itself as a leading dance company with an immense amount of popularity.

"Anyone will feel joy, romance, strength and they will be impressed," Bibik said.
