SOFTBALL: Cardinals rally for late victory

When Eastern Illinois University came up to bat in the eighth inning of game two Tuesday with a runner at second, it used a bunt to sacrifice the runner to third base. Ball State University pitcher Elizabeth Milian then retired the Panthers' next two batters to strand the runner at third.

BSU denies Hillel event on campus

The first request for an exemption from the smoking ban has been denied, causing the Ball State University Hillel to move its annual hookah night to Moe's Tavern on Tuesday night. Co-president Lindsay Gross said Hillel, the Jewish organization on campus, knew the smoking ban would be a problem for its hookah night fundraiser.

Hookah night hits Village

Matisyahu, a Hasidic reggae artist, played loudly from the speakers in the bottom level of Mo's Tavern on Tuesday night as the Ball State Hillel played host to its third-annual hookah night. More than 150 people attended the event, which featured more than 10 flavors of shisha for attendees to chose from.

Students build house of straw

In a field on Bethel Avenue, there sits a building made of straw. It's not something out of a fairy tale built by three pigs, but it is a new sustainable structure built during three semesters. Joseph Martin, a senior architecture and Spanish major, said the building's walls were one straw-bail wide and eight to 10 bails high.

Come with me if you want to smoke. Down the stairs, out the door and around the corner. The smoking area is just this way, but you'll need a hazmat suit to enter. You see, all the debris from careless smokers' habit have grown to astronomical proportion, and in order to smoke, you must stand waist deep in butts and empty packs.

Happy Earth Day

Vendors from Ball State University, Muncie and national organizations will fill University Green Tuesday as part of the university's Earth Day celebration. Layne Cameron, Ball State media relations manager, said the event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and it will feature activities such as a rock wall and geocaching.

Although Earth Day has come and gone, it's still a good idea to practice living green through your use of energy. I can't help but notice that while prices to provide energy to our homes are going up, we aren't making any more money. That's not fair. While we can't call our electric companies and beg for cheaper rates, there is something we can do.

Average Joe's has successful opening

Hundreds of hungry customers piled into the dining room as smells of a new kitchen cooking food and hopes of success radiated into the atmosphere. The Muncie community welcomed its newest restaurant as Average Joe's Grill, located at the former 909 Grille site, opened to a packed house Monday led by the efforts of Ball State University alumni and students.

Day of activities to inform students on 2 organizations

Two Ball State University organizations will have their semi-annual day of activities Tuesday. Ball State Nurses Association and the Reserve Officer Training Corps will have a rock wall, blood pressure testing and food from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. near Ball Gymnasium, BSNA adviser Carolyn Keihn said.

We selected the 33 players - one automatic bid from each team and 16 at-large bids - seeded them and placed them into a bracket. However now it's your turn to vote who should win The Ball State Daily New's player of the year award. Starting with the play-in game, each issue of the Daily News will be a new round of the tournament, with the championship game being April 24.

MEN'S GOLF: Coach disapointed with poor play

Although the Ball State University men's golf team was in third place with 18 holes left in the Rutherford Intercollegiate at University Park, Pa., the Cardinals finished seventh out of the 12-team field. After shooting a team-combined score of 293 and 297 in the first and second round, Ball State shot a 326 in the third round, which was the highest team score during that round.

Worth the wait

Sophomore telecommunications major Anne LaFree went to Late Nite Carnival and ended the night waiting in line for the ride "Freak Out." The ride seated 16 people and was shaped like a pendulum that swung the riders into the air while spinning them. "Up until this two hour wait in line, it's been amazing," she said.

Obama office to shuttle students

Voters wanting to cast their ballots before May 6 have the chance to hop on a free shuttle that will take them to the Delaware County building this week. The Obama for America Muncie office will shuttle Ball State University student downtown on Tuesday and Saturday.

SOFTBALL: Ball State takes hit in MAC standings with three losses

This weekend made it more difficult for the Ball State University softball team to make the Mid-American Conference tournament, but it did not ruin the Cardinals' chances. Ball State went 1-3 on the weekend, losing two games to Kent State University Friday and splitting a series against the University at Buffalo Saturday and Sunday.

MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State secures No. 2 seed in MAC with win vs. Toledo

Bobbing their heads between the final two matches Saturday, more than 25 fans didn't focus their attention on one moment until they heard a racket hit the ground. Ball State University's No. 1 singles player Jose Perdomo hit a screaming forehand past the University of Toledo's Jared Miller to clinch the second seed in the Mid-American Conference tournament, in a come-from-behind 4-3 victory.

After a weekend that resulted in three losses for the Ball State University baseball team, coach Greg Beals decided not to give his team a day off like he normally does on Mondays. The reason was he didn't want his players to get stuck on being swept and have it affect their play this week, he said.

SPEAK SOFTLY: The plight of the fifth-year undergraduate

There is something that has been bothering me for the last few weeks. I graduated from high school four years ago this May, yet I will not be graduating from Ball State after this semester. Yes, I am one of those fifth-year seniors. But seeing as how I am not the first person to have ever been in this position and will certainly not be the last, perhaps the plight of the fifth year senior deserves some examination.

Earthquake causes no damage to Ball State

Ball State University employees determined the campus sustained no damage from Friday's 5.2 magnitued earthquake, a university official said. Layne Cameron, media relations manager, said the quake was treated as a training exercise, as if significant damage could have been done.
