For the first time in more than two years the No. 13 Ball State University men's volleyball team lost to an unranked team. Ball State (0-3) lost to St. Francis University 29-31, 30-25, 32-30, 30-28 on Saturday in Loretto, Pa. This is the second time in the last three years Ball State has lost a road match to St.

Animal Shelter hosts campaign

About 20 animals at the Muncie Animal Shelter Saturday found a home thanks to Hill's Pet Nutrition's national "Change a Pet's Life Day" Campaign. The Muncie shelter was one of 300 shelters across the nation that participated in free adoption day, which waived the adoption fees for the first 10 animals.

The scene that unfolded Sunday at Worthen Arena was as repetitive as it was surprising. Another scrappy win for Ball State University's men's basketball team. Another strong second-half effort. Kellie Conrad, the Ball State University student member of the board of trustees, stood in a Bracken Library meeting room Sunday afternoon surrounded by a group of her possible replacements. The twelve students attended the informational meeting to learn about the application process and details regarding the only state-mandated student position on campus.

Throughout this week's preparation for its match against No. 1 Penn State University, one of the thoughts for coach Joel Walton was his team's travel arrangements. After the traveling nightmare Ball State University had last season going to Penn State, one can't blame the coach for the being concerned.

Library brings in lecture series

More than half a century after the establishment of the Federal Writers' Project, a part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, Muncie Public Libraries started a series of lectures called "Soul of a People." The series started Jan. 12 and will extend until April, with members of Ball State University faculty giving presentations on 20th-century artists and writers and their success due to Roosevelt's program.

FOOTBALL: Two Cardinals set to compete in all-star game

After starring for the Cardinals, two Ball State University football players will get the chance to showcase their skills to the nation in an all-star collegiate football game. Robert Brewster and Chris Miller were selected to compete in the Texas vs. the Nation Challenge, an all-star game for college football players who completed their eligibility after the 2008 season.

BSU now going lights off to save

In an effort to reduce spending and increase energy efficiency, Ball State University custodians have begun turning the lights off after they are finished with nightly cleaning. Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of facilities, planning and management, sent out a custodian report at the beginning of Winter Break which required that all lights be turned off after nightly shifts.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: 1st place Cards battle Zips

After losing to Northern Illinois University Wednesday night, the Ball State University women's basketball team travels to face another Mid-American Conference foe in the University of Akron Saturday. Ball State (11-7, 4-1 MAC) will compete against a second-straight team that has a deep bench of reserves.

Felony dropped for former SGA senator

Former Student Government Association senator Andrea Watts had class D felony charges dropped after a plea meeting, Judi Calhoun, Delaware County deputy prosecutor said Thursday. Watts' felony charge from a September arrest was dismissed, but other charges and misdemeanors are still pending, Calhoun said.

Environmental series brings in big names

Several prominent speakers will share their knowledge with Ball State University students and faculty this semester, including environmental lawyer Robert Kennedy Jr., newsman Ted Koppel and Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar. Robert Koester, director of the Center for Energy Research, Education and Service, booked Kennedy as part of the Bracken Environmental Lecture Series.
