Charter schools continue to open

In 2002, Ball State University sponsored its first charter school. Since that time, the university has added 28 additional schools to its ranks. Despite the bad economy, Larry Gabbert, director of the Ball State office of charter schools, said charter schools will continue to open.

Crews work to clean up campus, community

As the snow kept falling, Ron Ball kept plowing. The Muncie Street Department maintainace supervisor started working the streets at 5 a.m., just 'pushing the snow around,' he said.

Soldiers tell war memories

Soldiers in Iraq have seen things that many cannot imagine, and Tuesday several veterans came forward to share their stories. The "Eyes Wide Open" exhibit visited Ball State University on Monday and returned Tuesday for a discussion forum at 7 p.m. During the forum, the veterans showed three video clips focusing on the dehumanization of the enemy, sexuality and gender and rules of engagement.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards now sit alone atop MAC West

The Cardinals (9-8, 4-1 MAC), who entered Tuesday tied with Western Michigan University (7-12, 4-2 MAC) for the top spot in the West, benefitted from the Broncos 74-71 loss to MAC East-leading University at Buffalo (13-5, 5-1 MAC) in Kalamazoo, Mich., Tuesday night.

Classes canceled after they begin

While most Ball State University students prepared for a lazy snow day, some early commuters found out today's classes were canceled midway through an 8 a.m. yawner. University officials failed to inform students today's classes were canceled before the first time slot this morning.

FOOTBALL: Parrish announces linebacker coach for 2009 season

After coaching against Ball State University the last few seasons, a former Miami University football coach joined the Cardinals. Coach Stan Parrish announced Tuesday he hired Jay Hood, who was Miami's defensive coordinator and associate head coach last season, to be the linebackers coach at Ball State.

FOOTBALL: Collins reveals method behind football scheduling madness

Every year since athletics director Tom Collins arrived at Ball State University in December 2005, he has attempted to apply his theory about a football team's schedule. Despite inheriting multiple game contracts from his predecessor, Collins has tried to establish a system of playing one challenging game against a BCS conference team and three more winnable non-conference games.

Life is a cabaret

As glistening snow blanketed Ball State University campus Tuesday, the University Singers performed their 45th Annual Cabaret Concert in Sursa Performance Hall. With only two weeks to prepare, the performance was made to illustrate the history of the group and perform about 10 songs to more than 60 students and alumna.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards open East schedule tonight against BGSU

The perception in Mid-American Conference men's basketball this season is the Eastern Division being far and away superior to the West Division. The records might defend that notion. Through Tuesday's games, five of the six East teams have at least a .500 record and all six teams have a 60-48 overall record.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards defeat Sioux in overtime

The University of North Dakota women's basketball team leads Ball State University 39-36 at halftime. Leading all scorers is Cardinals' junior forward Danielle Gratton with 17 points and seven rebounds. Gratton is playing for the second straight game wearing a face guard after a suffering a broken nose against Northern Illinois.

File sharing punishments change

Sharing music is no less illegal than a week ago, but Ball State University students no longer need to fear a lengthy, expensive trial. The Recording Industry Association of America now informs file-sharing violators instead of immediately prosecuting. The organization forwards information to Internet Service Provider, who will sanction users.

Students slow down for snow day

There was supposed to be a rush at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Barnes and Noble Cafe. Instead, the student hot spot was empty. Its seats were as vacant as the classes on campus. Ball State University canceled classes after more than 10 inches of snow fell on central Indiana early Wednesday morning, according campus-wide e-mails and text messages sent out by Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications Tony Proudfoot.

'Superfoot' gets inducted

During the 1987 season, Ball State University football coach Paul Schudel did not like kicking field goals. The Cardinals tried to kick a few field goals early in the season, but they could not find anyone consistent enough to make them. "We tried a couple early, and we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a bass fiddle," Schudel said.

Students propose ice rink

When Brian Kirschner heard of an ice rink closing behind Muncie's Horizon Convention Center, an idea struck him: have Ball State University purchase it. Kirschner, a senior construction management major, said he heard about the closed rink from a friend, who works at the Muncie Children's Museum across the street.

Junior exercise science major Andrew Ryan woke up for his 9 a.m. class Wednesday and wondered how Ball State University could possibly have classes. He checked his e-mail several times before he had to leave, he said, and nothing had been sent leading him to believe he would have class.

Ball State University's Audiology Clinic has found a solution for uncomfortable, store-bought earbuds that don't fit ears. The clinic is offering custom-made earbud adapters to students for $75. Students interested will have impressions taken of their ears at the time of purchase.

About 25 students and military veterans gathered in the David Letterman Communication and Media Building to discuss several aspects of the Iraq war. Topics in the forum included the economic impact of the war, the behavior of servicemen and women and opinions on Sept.
