Israeli self-defense instructor teaches today

A martial arts instructor will come to Ball State University to demonstrate Krav Maga, an Israeli form of self-defense that is practiced by soldiers of the Israeli Defense Force. Etay Furman, a soldier who recently graduated from the IDF, is being hosted by the Ball State chapter of Hillel, a nationwide Jewish organization, and will be showing the basics of the fighting style to anyone willing to take part in the lesson.

Officials to begin student trustee selection

More than 10 Ball State University students have applied to be the new student trustee, Ebony Strong, student government association secretary, said. The deadline to apply for the position was Feb. 13. Student trustees are appointed by Gov. Mitch Daniels, after going through a selection committee at Ball State.

TRACK AND FIELD: Indianapolis runner commits to Cards

A track and field runner from Indianapolis committed to Ball State University on Thursday, The Indianapolis Star reported Monday. Pike High School runner Erica Campbell, the Cardinals' new commitment, finished third in the 200-meter dash in last year's state track meet with a time of 25.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cards' win streak gets extinguished vs. Big Ten team

Upsets do occur in sports, but that hasn't been the case for Ball State University's men's tennis team. Despite playing better than their previous matches with Big Ten Conference teams, the Cardinals still fell to Northwestern University 6-1 on Sunday. The defeat snaps Ball State's three-meet winning streak and moves them 4-3 this season.

Single SGA slate fails to meet nomination requirements

After one slate of candidates applied to run for Student Government Association elections at the nominating convention Monday evening, the Elections Board has determined the application packet is incomplete. A second nominating convention will be Thursday so the slate can correct the application packet errors, Elections Chair Marco Pretell-Vazquez said.

For the second straight week, the Ball State University men's volleyball team remained out the top 15 coaches poll. The Cardinals received four votes - 13 fewer votes than last week - to remain listed at No. 16 in the newest poll released Monday afternoon.

The wireless network encountered a few small problems on its first day utilizing the new software. Minor connection difficulties, load issues and a few other isolated events have been reported. Alex Chalmers, lead enterprise and security architect said nothing unexpected has happened.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards drop two matches

In their first doubleheader of the season, the Ball State University women's tennis team dropped both matches this weekend. After two consecutive shut-out victories of 7-0, the Cardinals traveled to Indianapolis to take on Murray State University on Saturday.

OUR VIEW: Unmarked milestones

There were some cheers and screaming. There were some half-naked men with their chests painted. But all in all, the Ball State University men's volleyball team's monumental win passed into the record books relatively unnoticed. Friday's win against the Milwaukee School of Engineering put the men's volleyball team at 1,000 wins in the program's history.

Ball Gym overtaken by robots

Robots took over the basketball court in Ball Gym on Sunday for the second annual Robot Scrimmage. Six high school robotics teams from across the state met at Ball State University to test and debug their robots before a For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology regional competition in March.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: A winning tradition

Win No. 1 Feb. 28, 1964 Ball State def. Earlham 15-8, 15-8, 15-4 After being a club team for five seasons, Ball State won its season opener against Earlham in three games. Known then as the Ball State power volleyball team, the Cardinals had eight of its nine starters return from the 1963 team, including Ralph Evans - the 1964 MIVA Most Valuable Player.

Work study hours remain unchanged

With a weak economy and the newly passed stimulus package, the future of federal and institutional work study at Ball State University for next academic year is still blurry. According to a report released by the Career Center in January 2009, the number of students working on campus increased by five percent, compared to January 2008.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards stop Buffalo's stampede

It was a clash of Mid-American Conference divisional leaders on Sunday as the West-leading Ball State University men's basketball team took on East-leading University at Buffalo at Worthen Arena. Fifteen tied scores and lead changes later, the Cardinals handed the Bulls a 53-51 upset in front of a crowd of 3,565, snapping Buffalo's nine-game winning streak and putting the Cardinals in better position for a division title heading into the MAC Tournament beginning March 10.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: MAC's best visits Worthen

Mid-American Conference Division leaders will clash on Sunday as the West-leading Ball State University men's basketball team plays host to East-leading University at Buffalo in a 2 p.m. showdown at Worthen Arena. The Cardinals (10-12, 5-5 MAC) will play their final game of the regular season against the East Division on Sunday and are hoping to break their current three-game losing streak.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards hit milestone with win No. 1,000

The Ball State University men's volleyball team is two games away from winning its 1,000 all-time match. Ball State defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering 30-13 in the first game of its best-of-five match tonight at Worthen Arena. Since becoming a varsity sport in 1964, the Cardinals have won 999 matches heading into tonight.

Campus potholes increase with ever-changing weather

If you drive down Riverside, don't be surprised to see cars swerving as if massive boulders are suddenly appearing in front of them. Unfortunately, it's almost worse. With the changing weather, Muncie streets are lined with potholes, causing erratic driving and blown-out tires.
