MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards' road woes continue

A career-high 22 points from senior forward Rob Giles and four players with double-digit scoring totals wasn't enough for the Ball State University basketball team Wednesday night, as the Cardinals lost 71-67 to host University of Toledo at Savage Arena. The loss for Ball State was its seventh straight in Toledo and moves the Cardinals (11-13, 6-6 Mid-American Conference) to 3-8 in road games this season, including 1-5 in MAC road contests.

WIPB goes digital

About 2.4 million people in the WIPB viewing area will receive a strictly digital broadcast signal months before the national conversion, whether they want it or not. WIPB switched from the analog to digital signal Tuesday at midnight. It was one of 10 stations in Indiana and 491 in the country to make the early conversion.

FOOTBALL: Kicker arrested Saturday

The starting kicker of the Ball State University football team was suspended indefinitely after he was arrested Saturday. Ian McGarvey was arrested at approximately 2:15 a.m. Saturday by Ball State police on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and minor consumption, according to the arrest report from the police department.

Student participation decreases at job fair despite downturn in economy

Business professionals lined the halls of Worthen Arena Wednesday giving students the opportunity to interview with companies ranging from Aflac to Walgreens. Cindy Hershman, coordinator of employer relations for the Career Center, said the employer turnout was slightly lower this year with about 90 employers compared to last year's 110 companies.

GYMNASTICS: Cards set to compete during live webcast

For the first time in recent memory, the Ball State University gymnastics team will travel to Southeast Missouri State University for a 7 p.m. contest to be broadcast live via webcast. The meet will be accessible through CBS affiliate KFVS12.com. "I think [the webcast] is exciting because it's more exposure for us," coach Nadalie Walsh said.

Chili sales benefit local charities

Bowl-carrying students, faculty and community members formed a line across the Atrium cafeteria today from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. eagerly waiting to receive their portions of regular, chicken or vegetarian chili. Racks of bowls were being carted in periodically by excited members of the Ball State University Clay Guild, the organization responsible for the 3rd annual fundraiser.

Spring training brings a sense of hope for baseball teams everywhere. Players believe this will be the breakout season, the year they claim the trophy. It has been three years since the Ball State University baseball team won the Mid-American Conference Tournament and played in the NCAA Regionals.

Recovering sex addict Michael Leahy talked to Ball State University students Tuesday night about pornography and its effect on American culture. The program, "Porn Nation," began at 9 p.m. in John R. Emens Auditorium. The event consisted of two segments.

Former BSU employee found guilty

A former Ball State University employee was found guilty of child solicitation Friday in Hamilton County Superior Court 2. Richard Turgeon, former senior information analyst for the Office of the Controller and Business Services, was convicted of the Class C felony - which carries a standard sentence of four years in prison and a maximum sentence of eight years - by Judge Daniel Pfleging.

OUR VIEW: Clean slate

Students aren't getting the whole story, and the potential Student Government Association slate isn't helping matters any. A discrepancy among the 400 signatures needed to run for student government has led to the need for a second nomination convention. Elections Board Chair Marco Pretell-Vazquez said some of the signatures "did not appear genuine" and had unverifiable addresses and "similar" handwriting styles.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ready to blast off

The University of Toledo men's basketball team arrived in Muncie Jan. 25 as winners of two out of its first three games in the Mid-American Conference hoping to improve to 3-1 in MAC play with a win against Ball State University. Instead the Cardinals used a balanced scoring attack featuring four players in double-digit point totals to defeat the Rockets 66-53 at Worthen Arena.

The greek community will come together Sunday at Pruis Hall for a recruitment workshop called Phired Up, an interactive experiential education program that helps fraternities and sororities drive higher-quality members into their organizations.

Robert Kennedy Jr. to speak at Emens about environment

Environmental activist Robert Kennedy Jr. will speak about the changing environment's impact on society 8 p.m. Wednesday at John R. Emens Auditorium. The event is the first in the Bracken Environmental Speaker Series and is free to the community. According to a press release, Kennedy's speech, "Our Environmental Destiny," will discuss how natural resources have shaped Americans' daily lives.

Stand-up contest comes to campus

As freshman, Brandon Jones walked through North Quad on Ball State University's campus, he noticed a sign advertising the Rooftop Comedy National College Comedy Competition. He had not done stand-up since high school, but decided to look into it anyway. "I saw the flier and was like, 'Well, what the hell?'" Jones said.
