New grant would be used to improve environment

Muncie and Ball State University are partnering to develop a grant proposal to the Environmental Protection Agency that could allocate up to $400,000 to address environmental problems in the city. The Community Action for a Renewed Environment grant is given to organizations to act as a project coordinator that addresses environmental issues, Ball State proposal manager Justin Miller said.

Campus organizations travel on Spring Break to help those in need

The Revolution For the third consecutive year the Revolution, a Ball State University church community, will take a group of students to do community service in Pass Christian, Miss., close to the New Orleans area. The organization will meet with students from Virginia Tech at the mission and students will help with reconstruction of buildings damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

GYMNASTICS: Well-rested Cardinals travel to Michigan for pair of meets

The Ball State University gymnastics team will head to East Lansing, Mich., Sunday for a 2 p.m. meeting with Michigan State University and the University of California, Berkeley. The Cardinals (3-9, 1-5 Mid-American Conference) enter the meet averaging a team score of 191.

Health Center to lose heat, hot water early next week

The Amelia T. Wood Health Center will have to suspend a few services Monday and Tuesday because of construction on North Residence Hall.

Elections Code needs revisions chair, adviser say

After a slew of controversy and campaigning violations, Student Government Association Elections Chair Marco Pretell-Vazquez said he expects a few changes to the Elections Code before next year's race. He said he would likely suggest changes to newly elected Cardinal Impact and expects them to agree with the proposed changes.

Speaker urges more diplomacy

Foreign policy expert Michael Kraig spoke to about 30 students and faculty Wednesday and told them why policy makers need to rethink American foreign policy. His presentation focused on shifting policy away from a Cold War mentality of putting U.S. enemy into "blocks" instead of trying to keep diplomatic channels open with all countries.

Campus Alliance to help Cardinal Impact take over

Fresh off winning Tuesday's campus-wide election, Cardinal Impact attended its final Student Government Association meeting before taking office. Wednesday's SGA meeting marked the last full Senate hearing for current slate Campus Alliance. Official transitions are after Spring Break at SGA's March 18 meeting.

With a 65-54 victory against Northern Illinois University, Ball State (21-8, 13-2 MAC) clinched the MAC West title for the third consecutive year. Ball State will have a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament in Cleveland.

Hip-hop group Tha Paper Boiz brings a new energy to the tired Muncie music scene, Village Green Records owner Travis Harvey said. In the past few years, many Muncie musical artists who were doing well have left the city either because they graduated from college or because they simply moved on to bigger and better things, he said.

Friedman talks about book

Thomas Friedman announced that green is the new red, white and blue to a crowd of about 1,350 people Wednesday night at John R. Emens Auditorium. Friedman, a three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author and columnist, was the second speaker in the Bracken Environmental Speaker Series sponsored by the provost and president's office along with Gaylor, Mutual Bank, Old National Bank and STAR Financial Group.

The Ball State University track and field team rode home from the Mid-American Conference Championships with two heavy awards weighting down their bus. Cardinals junior Ali Bishel and fifth-year senior Amber Williams collected two out of the possible three honors received at the conclusion of the invitational held in Kent, Ohio, this weekend.

Cardinal Impact huddled together crying and laughing about five minutes before the 2009 Student Government Association elections results were announced. Before the results came in, SGA President-elect Beth Cahill said her stomach was knotted, she had trouble breathing, her hands were clammy and all she could do was pray.

The Office of Student Life finally received team applications for the McKinley mile bike race Monday afternoon. Four men and one women's teams signed up, graduate assistant Kristan Kanorr said, which is about the same as last year. "I'd like to see a couple more girl's teams come in and even out the playing field," she said.
