Five off-campus reps appointed

Off-campus Ball State University students once again received representation at Wednesday's Student Government Association meeting when five off-campus caucus senators were formally appointed. All five candidates were approved and granted immediate voting privileges, allowing all four caucuses to again have a voice in Senate.

Students to perform shadow box show tonight near Bracken

Sophomore public relations major Lauren Rumpler happened to walk between Bracken Library and the University Theater Wednesday night when she stumbled across a performance in the front windows of the library. Rumpler stood and watched while silhouettes formed from trees to elevators that connected three different floors from the library.

SOFTBALL: No. 15 Buckeyes down Cardinals

Despite a solid outing, the Ball State University softball team was unable to pick up a win in a doubleheader against No. 15 Ohio State University. "We didn't have our best day, but we didn't play that bad either," coach Craig Nicholson said. "You have to give them a lot of credit.

As Ian Peckler stepped onto the Ball State University men's volleyball team's bus parked outside of St. John Arena in May, he knew his college career was finished. For 90 minutes, the senior All-American libero and school record holder watched the one thing he wanted the most - a championship - fall out of his grasp.

It's never too early to start planning life post graduation. However, it's easy for it to be too late to start planning. Waiting until May 10 to send out applications will likely leave students manning local drive-thru windows, if they're lucky. Toned, tanned arms, muscular legs, high cheekbones, chiseled jaw, flawless skin, a flat stomach and impeccably straight white teeth: this is my perception of how a beautiful human would look. My skewed concept of beauty sickens me. The media has indented this image of perfection into my head.

David Sedaris reads works in progress

Nick Young never heard of best-selling author David Sedaris before he heard him read several works in progress Tuesday night. Sedaris read his works in front of about 1,200 people, describing an encounter with an eccentric taxidermist, his own greed and his time living next to the Israeli Embassy in London.

Scraping by

The weather is warmer, and the outdoor fun can begin again. For some Ball State University students, their choice in outdoor recreation is against Ball State policy and Muncie ordinance. Anyone caught skateboarding, whether they are doing tricks or traveling from place to place, faces a $30 citation and the confiscation of the skateboard, according to university policy.

Student arrested on bribe suspicion

A Ball State University student faces a felony charge after police said he tried to use $17 to bribe his way out of an operating a vehicle while intoxicated arrest, according to police reports. Junior Jeremiah Lee Lowhorn, 21, faces a possible Class C felony charge, which carries a standard prison sentence of four years if he is convicted.

Sociology professor to receive teaching award

A regional sociology organization will honor a Ball State University professor for her teaching contributions, Ball State announced today. Melinda Messineo, associate professor of sociology, will receive the 2009 John F. Schnabel Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award.

Speaker discusses German history

Late professor Erdogan Kumcu left his mark at Ball State University during his 20 years as a professor at the Miller College of Business, and a memorial lecture series has been set up in his honor. In recognition of Kumcu's efforts to establish a foreign exchange program in Germany, the keynote speaker of the third-annual lecture offered a comparative history of Germany and the United States.

TV remains most used media, BSU study says

Senior Jane Groff said she gets ready in the mornings with a news television station as background noise and accomplishes daily tasks with TLC or music channels playing. She said television is her preferred media outlet because it's convenient. Unlike Internet programs, there is minimal user involvement required to operate it, which makes it easier for Groff to multitask, she said.

OUR VIEW: Take the stage

In the years since most of us have been on campus, Ball State University has not been known for its stellar choices in guest speakers and concert performances. This week, though, the university brought two speakers who drew crowds way above average. When Arun Gandhi, Mohandas Gandhi's grandson, spoke at Pruis Hall on Monday evening, hundreds of students had to be turned away because the house was full to capacity.

Grant funds immersive learning

Students, take note: The department of sociology and the Center for the Middletown Studies have a new idea for an immersive learning project. Two Ball State University professors received an $18,735 grant from the Discovery Group for a new immersive learning program which will be conducted in Fall of 2009.

Comedy group to debut movie tonight

After months of work, Something Else TV will premiere its new comedy movie, "Odd Job," tonight at 8 p.m. in Pruis Hall. When two friends are broke and without a job they only have one option, taking a job from a shady mobster, producer Bob Freeman said. Throughout the film viewers will see the hilarious reproductions of accepting this odd job and what the two friends have gone through to survive, he said.

VP named to replace Kinghorn

Randy Howard, associate vice president for finance and assistant treasurer, has been appointed the next vice president of business affairs, according to today's President's Perspective. In the newsletter, President Jo Ann Gora said Howard's leadership skills, experience managing budgets and knowledge of Ball State University made him right for the position.

Israeli diplomat to discuss Middle East

Deputy Consul General of Israel Gershon Kedar will speak on Ball State University's campus at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Fine Arts Building Rm. 217. His lecture will discuss what the Middle East should expect following the conflict in Gaza and the elections in Israel.
