Ball State gives 'Extreme' scholarships

Ball State University is providing four fully-paid scholarships for the children of Andy and Heather Cowan-Brown – the family being featured on the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" episode filmed in Bunker Hill, Ind. Oct. 21-28.Andy and Heather are factory workers who have struggled to raise their four children. The children – Ryan, Trevor, Kori, and Mason – are 16, 13, 12 and 8, respectively, said Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for University Marketing and Communications.

 A Ball State University alumna is opening a new gallery in downtown Muncie focused on helping up and coming artists, particularly students. Art and Soul by Phoebe Art Gallery, owned by Phoebe Wantz, will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: BSU begins season admist change

Along with the splitting of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams, former co-head coaches Bob Thomas and Laura Seibold-Caudill each took a team, with Seibold-Caudill taking the reigns of the women's team, a post she held from 1979-2004 when the teams were combined. During the time of the combined teams, Seibold-Caudill was in charge of the divers while Thomas coached the swimmers.

This summer's independent study abroad program to China and Korea will be the first offered through the Rinker Center since 2001. China Initiative Coordinator Po Hu said this study abroad program is favorable for students because it is short, relatively inexpensive and culturally immersive.

Edward James Olmos wishes he would never have to give another seminar like he did Wednesday night in Pruis Hall."The things that I'm talking about are already so understood," Olmos said. "It's really nothing that you haven't heard before."Olmos, a long-time actor and social activist, spoke about the definition of race, conflicting religion, personal identity and how none of those issues should divide us in front of a crowd of more than 600. He said that peace comes from loving all parts of oneself, no matter where those parts originate.

After receiving a newly remodeled home from ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" earlier in the week, the Cowan-Brown family also got another gift Wednesday as Ball State presented the four children with full-ride scholarships to the university. However, the new question that emerges is whether Ball State will continue to be this generous with scholarships for students, or potential students,from Muncie when the cameras are turned off.

FOOTBALL: Page still working hard despite season-ending injury

Kelly Page knew his thumb was hurt, but wanted to stay in Ball State University's game against Bowling Green State University on Oct. 17.When coach Stan Parrish called for a running play, Page decided to tough it out."I was going to come out," Page said. "But I saw it was a run play, so I was like ‘I can stick this out.' I wasn't going to go in there and try and throw the ball and get another interception. I couldn't feel the ball to begin with."
